Provide concessions on electricity bills to low-income families

Leader of the House Minister Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday (12) that the Government is focusing on providing relief to groups that deserve relief in paying their electricity bills.

He said this in response to a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The Opposition Leader said people are finding it hard to bear the electricity bill hike and added that low-income families, industrialists and the tourism sector were badly affected by the tariff hike. Hence, he urged the Government to reconsider this tariff hike and provide some relief to the low-income groups.

The Leader of the House said that it has been decided to hold a debate on the electricity bill increase on the 29th and in addition, measures are also being taken to include the revised budget in the agenda.

He said that discussions are in progress to provide concessions on electricity bills to low-income groups in the Interim Budget, to be presented at the end of this month.

He added that since the proposal will be discussed on August 30, 31st, September 1 and 2, a decision will be made regarding the groups that should receive relief. “I think at that discussion, measures would be taken to see how best relief measures could be devised in order to provide relief to these low income groups,” Premajayantha said.
