The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Maldives organized a mobile consular and labour service in the Thilafushi island in Maldives recently.

This was the second such mobile service conducted by the Mission after the highly successful inaugural event on March 17 in Hulhumale island.

The Mission team headed by the High Commissioner provided a range of services to Sri Lankans who patronised the service, including the acceptance of new passport applications, conversion of Sri Lankan driving licences, attestation of certificates, as well as attending to labour related issues.

The team also visited two boat building and repair yards, where a large number of Sri Lankans are employed.

It is noteworthy that the Manager of a Sri Lankan–Maldivian joint venture enterprise, Keel Marine Pvt Ltd, Asanka Fernando gave the office space of the company, free of charge to the Mission to hold the mobile service.

Thilafushi is an artificial island created as a municipal landfill industrial area situated to the west of Male.

The major industrial activities in the island are boat manufacturing cement packing, methane gas bottling and large-scale warehousing.
