The police said yesterday (August 3), that 7 people, including 4 members of the same family, have been arrested in connection with the shooting and killing of a youth in Achchipuram area of Vavuniya.
A 30-year-old family man named Ranja N. Johnson, known as Ranja N, was shot dead with an Indian gun and cut with a sword last Sunday evening in Vavuniya, Achchipuram area, and the person's hand was cut off and taken away and dumped elsewhere.
Vavuniya Regional Crimes Squad Police along with the Chidambarapuram Police had conducted investigations in connection with the incident. After investigations, the Indian gun used in the attack was recovered by the Chidambarapuram Police.
Subsequent investigations by the Vavuniya Regional Crimes Squad have recovered 4 swords believed to have been used in the attack and bloodstained clothes . Seven people, including 4 members of the same family, have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the incident. One of the 7 persons is being treated at Vavuniya Hospital due to injuries and the other 6 persons have been detained at the police station and further investigations have been carried out.
In the meantime, the police said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the attack occurred as a result of long-standing enmity between the two groups and the occasional clashes also due to it.
