Death toll 27 1,135 cases in 27 days

Hospitals told to have wards
Get booster dose without fail

The Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Department yesterday said that 1,135 COVID-19 positive cases and 27 deaths were reported during the past 27 days in the country.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Samitha Ginige said there is an apparent increase in COVID-19 positive cases in the country and more and more COVID-19 positive cases may have already been integrated into society.

The Health Ministry has informed all hospitals to keep wards dedicated for the COVID patients ready in face of soaring COVID cases in the country.

He said that the people have ignored to adhere precautionary measures to arrest the spread of the pandemic due to the turbulent situation in the country during the past few months.

“The number of COVID positive cases were brought to minimum level due to the COVID prevention campaign launched by the authorities which included vaccination drive and social distancing measures,” he said.

He said that the country has witnessed the spread of the pandemic with the outbreak being reported from many countries.

Dr.Ginige said that the protective immunity against the virus among the people who had the first and the second doses has diminished and the people should be encouraged to have first and second COVID booster jabs soon.

He was of the view that the protective immunity against the virus will exist in the body for a period of about a year if people get the booster doses.

“The people can obtain booster doses till October 31”, he said.
