Human-Elephant Conflict worsened by those who set up remedial methods - Farmers

ANURADHAPURA: Farmer organisations in Anuradhapura said that the parties in resolving the Human-Elephant Conflict have worsened it.

They said that the electric fences should be erected around a village or a cluster of villages and paddy fields rather than around wildlife reserves.

They brought this issue to the Anuradhapura Government Agent, the District Wildlife Conservation Assistant Director and the other relevant authorities. Under these circumstances, the ECO System Conservation and Management Project (ESCAMP) has introduced an Electric Fence around a village or a cluster of villages and paddy fields as two separate units.

Erecting and maintaining the new fence is carried out by villagers. ESCAMP Director Anura Sathurusinghe said that an electric fence was so far erected surrounding the habitats of the wild elephants, which has worsened the conflict.
