Senior TNA member calls for Sampanthan’s resignation

A senior Tamil National Alliance (TNA) member on Sunday called for the resignation of party leader R. Sampanthan noting that the TNA leader’s deteriorating health prevented him from steering the party forward in an active manner.

“In view of the current volatile political situation in the country, it is suitable for the leader of the Tamil National Alliance, R. Sampanthan, to step down from the leadership and hand it over to someone else, TELO Vanni District Member of Parliament Selvam Adeikalanathan told reporters.

He went on to say that Sampanthan’s health keeps deteriorating and this prevents him from engaging in political activity in an active manner.

The MP said if Sampanthan resigns from the leadership, the next leadership should go to the other partner parties of the Tamil National Alliance according to a rotation system.

He said that TELO, PLOTE and ITAK are currently partner parties of the Tamil National Alliance.

“As Sampanthan MP is a representative of the ITAK the next leader should come from other partner parties in the TNA” he added.

When asked if A. Sumanthiran, MP is not suitable for leadership, MP Adeikalanathan replied that Sumanthiran too hails from ITAK in addition to being a newcomer to politics and added a senior from another affiliated party was more suitable.

Selvam Adeikalanathan stated that the TELO was planning to discuss the matter with Sampanthan shortly.
