Indika, Chamari to be Sri Lanka’s flag bearers at Birmingham Games

Experienced weightlifter Indika Dissanayake and star cricketer Chamari Atapattu have been appointed captain of the men’s and women’s teams respectively of the Sri Lanka contingent at the XXII Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The duo will be the flag bearers for Sri Lanka during the opening ceremony of the Games on July 28. Interestingly, there will be more women athletes (60) than men (50) in the 165-strong Sri Lanka contingent at the Games which ends on August 8. Dissanayake won a silver medal in the 69kg weight category at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Brisbane.He has also won silver medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Penang (2013) and Pune (2015) in addition to bronze medals in Gold Coast (2017) and Tashkent (2021).

Chamari is captain of the Sri Lanka women’s T20 cricket team which has been introduced in Birmingham 2022 for the first time in Commonwealth Games history. (AO)
