Errant cargo handling grounds Turkish plane at BIA

A Turkish Airlines cargo plane met with an accident at Katunayake Airport on Sunday night while preparing to return to Turkey with an apparel cargo.

This is a Turkish Airlines A-330-300 Airbus type cargo plane.

This plane had arrived at Katunayake Airport on Sunday at around 9.00 pm carrying a load of goods from Istanbul, Turkey. It was slated to take off for Istanbul, Turkey at around 11.30 pm.

Due to the strong windy conditions at Katunayake airport and its surrounding area, a container that was brought to be loaded on the aircraft and parked near the aircraft had hit its engine.

Airport ground operators have allegedly parked the container near the plane and have not applied brakes properly when it was blown towards the plane by the strong wind and collided with the engine.

Due to this incident, the second turbine on the right wing of this aircraft has suffered damages.
