St. Joseph’s College began their campaign for the Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division league title with a rousing 34-3 victory over Kingswood College in the curtain raiser match of the tournament at Havelock Park yesterday.

The Josephians made their intentions quite clear from the kick-off and completely rattled their opponents while collecting their points from two goals and four tries after having built up a commanding 19-3 lead at half time.

The lads from Darley Road will be pleased with this performance as they were able to send a clear message to the rest of their opponents by collecting a bonus point as well in the form of scoring four tries.

The only disappointing period for St. Joseph’s was the last 10 minutes of the first half where they conceded a series of penalties and also lost a couple of their key players to the ‘sin bin’ due to rough play.

However, the Kingswoodians were unable to take advantage of this situation and make any inroads as they managed to convert only a solitary penalty through Imanka Ishara.

Earlier, St. Joseph’s made a flying start to the game with Skipper Teran Karunanayake racing a way to score a superb try in the second minute of the game after the forwards had won possession through a second phase move.

St. Joseph’s then scored back-to-back tries inside four minute of play to extend their lead to 19-0 after just 15 minutes of play with dynamic Number Eight Navin Marasinghe and full back Isuru Kanchana doing the honours.

After the turnaround, the Joes further consolidated their position and went on to add three more tries to their tally through scrum half Vihanga Randika and hooker Sithika Sanjeewa.

Dilhara Subash converted the opening two tries for St. Joseph's.
