Women over 21 allowed as domestics abroad

The Government has taken measures to revise the minimum age limit for Sri Lankan women seeking employment as domestics abroad to 21, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane said.

Addressing the media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department to inform the decisions taken at this week’s Cabinet meeting, Minister Gunawardane said that the current minimum age for Sri Lankan women to work as domestic workers abroad is 25 years for Saudi Arabia, 23 years for other Middle Eastern countries and 21 years for other countries.

Following a proposal made by the Labour and Foreign Employment Minister, the Cabinet decided on June 6, 2022 to appoint a Cabinet Sub-Committee headed by the Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister to study and report on the revision of the age limit.

Taking into consideration the recommendations of that subcommittee, the Cabinet decided to revise the minimum age limit for domestic employment of Sri Lankan women abroad to 21 years.
