Massive cultivation drive launched to avert food crisis

Co-Cabinet Spokesman, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that a massive cultivation drive was launched across the country in preparation for the food shortage and several decisions taken in this regard were approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

He was addressing a media briefing at the Government Information Department yesterday (21).

The stock of fertilizer from India will reach Sri Lanka by July 6 and it will be possible to distribute the stock of fertilizer to the farmers by July 15, the Minister said.

The Minister said that it is not a secret that there is a shortage of food and the people of this country, realizing the seriousness of this situation, have turned to cultivating.

Minister Amaraweera said that this would alleviate the severe food shortage that could have occurred and added that food stocks should not be accumulated unnecessarily.

The Minister said that the Paddy Marketing Board will release rice to the market in the future.
