Savini Jayasuriya continued with her excellent form as she clinched the Women’s Singles title at the 107th Colombo Open Tennis Championships while defeating Saajida Razick 6-2, 6-2 in the final encounter played at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.

The bottom seed and the 19-year-old schoolgirl from Gateway College, Colombo lived up to expectations as the favourite and went on to complete another rousing straight set victory despite a short interruption due to bad weather.

The most significant feature of Jayasuriya’s performance at this tournament was that she was never stretched into a three-setter on her way to the final encounter. The only tough moment for her in this event was when she struggled a bit to overcome the more promising Vishmi Serasinghe 6-1, 6-4 in an exciting semi-final encounter.

However, Jayasuriya got her act together well from the start in this more important final and put herself in contention for an easy win by claiming the first set 6-2.

Thereafter, she consolidated her position with a dominant performance and went on to wrap up the game and the second set by an identical scoreline.

This was Jayasuriya’s second title in this tournament having earlier bagged the Women’s Doubles along with her partner Janali Mannamperi.
