Programme to relocate foreign animals to Pinnawala Zoo

The Department of National Zoology has initiated a programme to relocate the foreign animals at the Dehiwala Zoo to the Pinnawala Zoo.

Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had inquired from officials as to why the Pinnawala Zoo has attracted a lesser number of visitors, at a meeting held at the Ministry on the future development activities of Pinnawala and Ridiyagama Zoos.

Officials said that there are local animals at the Pinnawala Zoo, but that it does not house exotic foreign animals.

Although the programme was not implemented after the suspension of the animal exchange programme following the COVID-19 pandemic, steps have been taken to resume the programme in the near future.

Meanwhile, it was emphasized that a large number of people have come forward to join the programme launched for the care of animals due to lack of financial resources to feed the animals at the zoos. Meanwhile, the Department of National Zoological Gardens has taken steps to open a new 20 acre Animal Husbandry Farm in Ridiyagama.

Secretary to the Ministry Chandra Herath and the Director General of the Department of Wildlife Conservation were also present.
