National Dhamma School Day to be celebrated in Anuradhapura

The 127th National Dhamma School Day is scheduled to be held in the Anuradhapura district on August 3. The ceremony will be held at the Anuradhapura Sambuddha Jayanthi Temple premises.

An initial meeting for making arrangements for holding the programme was recently held at Anuradhapura kachcheri with Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara in the chair and the Maha Sangha headed by Chief Incumbent of the Anuradhapura Sambuddha Jayanthi Temple, the chief Sanganayake of the North and North Central Provinces and President of the District Sasanarakshaka Mandalaya Ven. Nugethenne Pagnanandha Nayaka Thera.

Ven. Mugunuwela Anuruddha Nayaka Thera, secretary of All Ceylon Sasanarakshaka Mandalaya, Ven. Kunchuttuwe Dhammakusala Thera, Secretary of the Anuradhapura district Sasanaraksamandalaya, North Central Province Governor Maheepala Herath and Manjula Seneviratne, kachcheri Chief Accountant participated in the meeting.

At the meeting Governor Herath stated that by associating with the temple the virtues and desirable human qualities are definitely improved. Dhamma school education should be promoted in a sustainable manner with dedication since it helps to create spiritual advancement among youngsters. He stressed that rulers should have a clear understanding about the immense, untried and dedicated service being rendered by the Maha Sangha for protecting and nurturing the Buddha Sasana and its qualities. He pointed out that events like National Dhamma School Day would help to bring about peace and harmony in the prevailing critical situation.

Additional Commissioner General of Buddhist Affairs Keerthi Siribaddhana stated at the meeting that 100 members of Maha Sangha, 100 senior Dhamma school teachers 200 selected Dhamma School students and 1,000 invitees including government officials and representatives of Buddhist organizations would participate in the programme.

Distribution of official uniforms to Dhamma school teachers, awarding scholarships and medical aid and oratory competitions will take place during the programme.

Delivering an Anusasana Ven. Nugethenne Pagnananda Nayaka Thera said that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Dhamma School Day celebrations were not conducted in the last two years. This ceremony to be held in Anuradhapura givers us a golden opportunity to tell the whole world about our glory and splendour declared by the range of monuments of historical cultural and religious importance standing therein. The selection of Anuradhapura for holding the National Dhamma School Day celebrations is appropriate for ushering the country into state of sustainable prosperity and encouraging children to attend Dhamma school, the Thera said. Anuradhapura Government Agent Jayasundara said that he would fulfill all requirements to make the national event a great success at District and Divisional Secretariat level.
