COPE tells Auditor General to report on CEBs

Rs.3.1 bn 50 faulty generator purchase

The attention of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) was drawn to an incident of 50 generators purchased in 2017 and 2018 at a cost of Rs.3,100 million which allegedly were not functional at the time of purchase.

This was brought to the notice of the COPE during the meeting chaired by its Chairperson Prof. Charitha Herath in Parliament last Friday to examine the Auditor General’s reports for the years 2017 and 2018 and the current performance of the Ceylon Electricity Board.

During the discussion on the 50 generators, the members of the COPE Committee also commented on this and pointed out that the generators were not functional at the time of purchase, Parliament media unit said. So they asked if there was a quality check on these purchases and the price that was charged for this.

Officials who were present pointed out that the purchases had been inspected by the officials and that Rs. 3,100 million had been spent on the purchases and that all 50 generators are still in operation today.

Commenting further, the Committee Members stated that these generators were not operational at the beginning and later functioned after repairs.

The COPE Chairman directed that a report be submitted to the Auditor General’s Department within two weeks in this regard.
