‘Just 18’ youth to get voting chance if snap Election comes

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake yesterday said that for the first time, a provisional list of youths who have completed 18 years but not registered in the Electoral Register will be prepared through the Grama Niladhari officers.

He said the decision was taken to give these young people a chance to vote if the country decides to dissolve Parliament on time and hold a snap General Election in the face of the situation in the country.

He said the proposal was made during a discussion between the Elections Commission and Political Parties and was approved by the Commission.

He also said that the aim was to give the younger generation the right to vote as soon as possible and that there were more than one million new voters.
