Patali deserts SJB and becomes Independent

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka yesterday informed Parliament that he would function as an Independent MP in Parliament to contribute to the nation with a sense of more responsibility.

Making a special statement in Parliament, he said that he had informed the matter to Opposition and SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa in writing on his decision. He added that he noted in the same letter his decision to be independent is not inconsistent with the core of the MOU he inked with the SJB on March 18, 2020.

He recalled that he predicted the economic crisis of this country in 2013 and 2016.

He said that as Premier Wickremesinghe told in Parliament on Tuesday, the solution for this crisis would be an IMF based one or a home grown solution with shrunken consumption policy.

He said further, whatever the solution may be, all political Parties have to shed their political differences and make a collective effort to get the country and its economy rid from the current crisis.

He said that the people have rejected the existing political tradition in the country and all have had to change themselves including the politicians, rulers and the subjects.

He said further that this is a time, both the government side and the Opposition side should work with a great sense of responsibility to get the country on the proper economic track, than any time in the past.

He added that he made his decision with the same sense of responsibility in mind and believed he could render his service to the nation by being independent. He added that he would not accept a Ministerial portfolio as speculated by the media.
