Cabraal released on Rs.10 mn surety bail

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday granted bail to former Governor of the Central Bank Ajith Nivard Cabraal over a private case filed against him.

He was released on a surety of Rs.10 million.

The complaint alleges that during his tenure as the Central Bank Governor from 2006 to 2015, Cabraal had paid USD 6.5 million to an American national without the Cabinet’s approval and thereby is responsible for criminal breach of trust and criminal abuse of funds. When the case was taken up, President’s Counsel Sarath Jayamanne representing the complainant requested permission for them to file an amended complaint.
