Indian currency smuggler held at BIA

An Indian national was arrested by the Katunayake Airport security officials yesterday morning for attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth more than Rs.48 million.

Security officials had checked the passenger’s baggage after he had behaved in a suspicious manner. Security officials had observed the passenger visiting a toilet at the Katunayake Airport departure passenger terminal several times in a short period of time.

A search of his baggage found 117,000 Canadian dollars and 19,000 Euros.

The passenger and the foreign currency he had taken with him were  handed over to the Customs officials at the Katunayake Airport for further investigations.

The Customs had confiscated the foreign currency being carried by the passenger and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs.10,000.
