Ukraine promised not to target long-range weapons inside Russia - Blinken

UKRAINE, RUSSIA: Ukraine has promised the United States that it will not use new long-range weapons against targets inside Russia, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday.

"The Ukrainians have given us assurances that they will not use these systems against targets on Russian territory," Blinken told a joint news conference with NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg. The United States said Tuesday that it will supply Ukraine with advanced missile systems, including the Himars multiple-launch rocket system that can simultaneously launch multiple precision-guided missiles.

President Joe Biden said that the United States would not support attacks inside of Russia, which quickly warned of greater risks of conflict between Washington and Moscow. Meanwhile, Russia's Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said that Russia hoped that "common sense would prevail" over Washington's possible supply of long-range missile weapons to Ukraine.

"According to US media reports, the administration may give Kyiv HIMARS MLRS and M270 MLRS, which will be equipped with M31 GMLRS guided missiles. There is a risk that such equipment will be placed near Russia's borders and Ukrainians will be able to strike at Russian cities," Antonov said.

Such a situation is unacceptable and intolerable for us. I am confident that our Armed Forces will do everything to nullify the capabilities of the [Ukrainian] Armed Forces."
