KKS Customs thwart gold biscuit smuggling racket

Sri Lanka Customs Sub Prevention Office in Kankesanthurai has confiscated 1.912 Kilograms of gold biscuits worth Rs.43 million that were taken into custody in the seas off Talaimannar on Saturday (May 28), Customs Deputy Director and Media Spokesman Sudatta Silva said.

Three suspects have also been taken into custody along with gold which had been planned to be smuggled to India, he said. The suspects have been identified as residents of Puthukkudiyiruppu and Pesalai.

The gold biscuits were seized by a team of sailors attached to the Thammenna Base in Talaimannar based on a tip off received by the North Central Naval Headquarters. The raid was conducted about 1.2 nautical miles away from the second sandbank off Talaimannar, Silva said. Deputy Director General (Northern Province) of the Sri Lanka Customs conducted the investigations into the matter and imposed a penalty of Rs.750,000 on each suspect, the Spokesman said.
