Capital expenditure reduction through ‘Interim Budget’ - Minister

No price control on essential goods, concessions for needy

Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardana yesterday confirmed that the government will reduce capital expenditure through the Interim Budget with the intention of allocating funds to provide relief to the public. Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held at the Government Information Department,  Minister Gunawardena said the government plans to provide several concessions to the people through the upcoming Interim Budget. He said that the government has no intention of imposing price control on goods, since it will create shortages. “When there were shortages of petrol and diesel recently, a black market was created.Considering the prevailing condition in the country, the Trade Minister will import certain goods which are at short supply and will sell at competitive rates,” he added.

He said inflation has also been increasing across the world.
