‘Students’ performance should be measured by teachers’ performance’

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that educational performance in the school system in developed countries is measured not by students but by teachers.

The Minister was addressing the staff officers of the Education Ministry and the National Institute of Education (NIE) with the aim of enhancing performance in the education sector.

Minister Premajayantha said that in countries where there is a high level of education, the performance of students is measured not by their performance but by their teachers’ performance. Therefore in those countries the role of teachers should always be at the optimum level.

“The accountability in the role of teachers should always be at an optimum level,” Dr. Premajayantha said. The Minister added that the overall educational process should be normalised in order to revive the education of students who have been affected by the current economic crisis and Covid-19 pandemic. With the aim of improving performance in the field of education, a programme for staff officers was carried out at the NIE.

The Minister said that coordination between the various Departments, Institutions, Services, Branches and Units under the Education Ministry should be strengthened and close attention should be paid to the methods of maintaining services efficiently and effectively.

Education Ministry Secretary Nihal Ranasinghe, NIE Director General Sunil Jayantha Navaratne and many other scholars in the field of education participated.
