Agriculture Professors from three Universities prepare food security proposals

A group of Agriculture Professors from three Universities have prepared proposals for the future agricultural development and food security in our country, taking into account the recent situation facing agriculture in Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, a group of 10 professors representing the Universities of Peradeniya, Ruhuna and Sri Jayewardenepura handed over the relevant proposals to Agriculture, Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at the latter’s Ministry.

Prof. Buddhi Marambe, Prof. Janendra de Costa, Prof. Devika de Costa, Prof. Aruna Kumara, Prof. Sivanandavel, Prof. Saman Dharmakeerthi, Prof. Meththika Vithanage, Prof. Nalika Ranatunga, Prof. Warshi Dandeniya, Prof. Nilantha Liyanage were present.

They have formulated these proposals on the development of agricultural sector activities and food security under three categories namely short term, medium term and long term.

Speaking at the event, the professors said that these proposals should be implemented immediately if Sri Lanka is to overcome the food crisis that it may face in the near future. Commenting on the proposal made by the professors, Minister Amaraweera said that steps will be taken to implement the proposals taking into consideration all the points contained in the proposal. He also said that Sri Lanka’s food security programme was in jeopardy during the last Maha season and the current Yala season.

“Therefore, we are as the Government will carry out the resolutions for food security in Sri Lanka,” the Minister said.
