Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa’s wife Shashi Weerawansa has been sentenced to two years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in relation to a case being heard over producing false information to obtain a diplomatic passport.

The order was issued by former Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika C Ragala yesterday.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court also ordered to pay a fine of Rs.100,000 and an additional six months in prison if she does not pay the fine.

Delivering the order, the Magistrate stated that the prosecution was able to prove the charges against the suspect beyond reasonable doubt.

This is over an incident where Shashi Weerawansa had allegedly obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Immigration and Emigration Department.

President’s Counsel Shavendra Fernando representing the suspect pleaded that the suspect would be given a simple sentence as she has two unmarried children.

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Piries appearing on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department stated that the suspect had committed this offense intentionally using the political powers.

Accordingly, the Magistrate ordered to send a certified copy of the judgement to the secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration.
