The Government has paid urgent attention to issue fuel for farmers for agricultural purposes during the ‘Yala’ cultivation season, Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.
He said that he sought the assistance of Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara to issue fuel for farmers on priority basis.
He said farmers would be issued fuel from 217 selected fuel stations covering all districts. The list of the fuel stations has been forwarded to the Power and Energy Minister.
Farmers, who produce a letter with the approval of the Agrarian Service Centres, will be issued the required amount of fuel to cans through those authorised fuel stations. “The ‘Yala’ season has commenced, but farmers all over the country have faced inconveniences due to lack of fuel. Therefore a special discussion to implement an expedited programme to issue fuel to farmers was held on Tuesday at the Ministry. Minister Wijesekara promised to even provide additional fuel stocks for the ‘Yala’ season. The ‘Yala’ season is critical even to find the paddy seeds for the next season, given that the previous ‘Maha’ season failed and the harvest had dropped drastically,” the Minister said.
