May 9 incident: Errant cops will be punished - Minister

Criminal investigations are being carried out against 21 police officers including Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon over charges of negligence of duties during the violence that took place in Colombo against the peaceful protesters on May 9, Public Security Minister Tiran Alles told Daily News.

He said action will be taken against the police officers who have neglected their duties with regard to this incident once the investigations are completed and the report is received.

Denying media reports, which said that the Attorney General (AG) has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to transfer Senior DIG Tennakoon, the minister said the AG has instructed the IGP to transfer that senior officer only if it is necessary to conduct an impartial investigation against him. The minister also said the IGP has informed him that the IGP did not state to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that the senior officers on the field had not followed his instructions in order to prevent SLPP supporters entering the anti-government protest site at Galle face on May 9.

The CID recorded a statement from the IGP over this incident on May 21, after which the media had reported that the IGP had stated to the CID that his senior officers had not followed his instructions properly.
