Buy fuel only from authorised filling station: Minister

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera urged the public to buy petroleum only from authorised filling stations established countrywide and not to buy fuel from third parties.

Following the scarcity of fuel, it has been revealed that certain persons sell fuel illegally at a higher price. Investigations have revealed that these racketeers are maintaining illegal stocks of fuel, aiming to sell it for higher prices.

Under the Petroleum Act, only authorized dealers can sell or maintain petroleum stocks in the country. Therefore selling or maintaining fuel stocks privately is prohibited by law.

Investigations have revealed that the racketeers mix petroleum products with other substances and sell them at a high price.

Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) sources said these substandard petroleum products may cause serious damage to motor vehicles as such substandard fuel does not comply with international standards.

Therefore the Minister urged the public not to encourage such an illegal trading and to inform to the police about it.

Meanwhile a CPC spokesman said that Octane 95 petrol carried by two fuel ships is being dispatched to filling stations islandwide from yesterday. With the two shipments of the Octane 95 petrol, the stock available with the CPC is sufficient for the next six-week period.

Therefore Octane 95 petrol users are requested not to panic and buy Octane 92 petrol, since the fuel stations will receive Octane 95 petrol from today.
