Vinuda clinches U-14 Youth Chess title

Vinuda Gunathilake of Royal College won the Sri Lanka National Youth Under 14 Years Chess Championships which concluded yesterday. Vinudha scored 6 points out of 7 possible games with a better tiebreaker after tying with four more players, Disara Tennakoon, Malisha Weeratunge, Disal Weerasekara, and D.R.B.G Galkotuwa. The tournament was conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) with 12 events in six groups under 8,10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 and the Open women's category.

Vinuda beat J.SW Basnayake, Thathika Waduge, D.C.B.K Seneviratne, Budmina Hettigoda, Devindya Oshini Gunawardena, and drew with H.M.J.R Herath and Disara Tennakoon to reach 6 points and the Championship title with the gold medal. Disara Tennakoon of Dharmaraja Vidyalaya secured second place with the silver medal with a score of six points and the tiebreaker out of seven games.

The third place was won by Maleesha Weerasekara of D.S Senanayake, Colombo, also with six points and the better tiebreaker than the other two earned six points and won the bronze medal.

Disal Weerasekara (Sri Chandananda Buddhist School) and D.R.B.G Galkotuwa (Dharmaraja) also scored six points out of seven games but had to satisfied with the 4th and the 5th places.
