Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday called upon all tourism promotion sectors to join hands in creating a conducive environment to promote the country’s tourism industry considering that it will immensely help to increase our foreign exchange earnings.

The Opposition Leader made these remarks at a meeting with representatives of the Hotels Association of Sri Lanka(THASL) at the Opposition Leader’s official residence in Colombo. THASL President M.Shanthikumar led the delegation.

Highlighting the importance of developing the country’s tourism industry, the Opposition Leader said our country eagerly needs foreign exchange to uplift the economy and bring down the escalating Cost of Living for the benefit of people.

He said the country’s tourism industry could immensely help to overcome the present deteriorating economic situation and help the country overcome this dark period.

The THASL Shanthikumar said in order to revamp the country’s tourism industry, all Opposition parties should unite considering that it is the only solution to overcoming the current political crisis.

He said the occupancy rate in hotels have plunged and the opposition could come forward unconditionally to lift the country out of this mess.

He further said that there are excellent, efficient and knowledgeable Members of Parliament and we are confident that all of them could combine with the Prime Minister to steer the country out of troubled waters.

Shanthikumar said the direct and indirect employment in the tourism industry currently exceeds over 500,000.

“In addition, nearly three million people such as fishmongers, vegetable vendors, handicraft sellers and traders in remote areas highly depend on this industry,” he said.
