Southwest Monsoon arrives

The Southwest monsoon is established over the island, the Meteorology Department said yesterday.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North Western and Southern Provinces. Fairly heavy showers above50 mm can occur in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Northern Province and in the Anuradhapura district.

Strong winds about 40 to 50 kmph can be expected over the western slope of the Central hills, the Northern, North Central and North Western Provinces and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

Meanwhile the sea area extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankasanturai and Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough and very rough. The other sea areas around the island will be rough.

There is a possibility to increase swell waves (about 2.5 – 3.0 m) in the sea area extending from Kankasanturai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Galle and Hambantota.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
