SJB will punish wrongdoers if any - Opposition Leader

‘Former PM should have stepped down peacefully’

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament that if the members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) were involved in violent activities, they will be investigated and appropriate action will be taken against them irrespective of their rank.

He blamed the former Prime Minister of failing to make a peaceful exit which eventually led to the unrest in the country.

“It is because the former Prime Minister failed to make a peaceful exit that state sponsored Rajapakasa terror was unleashed on innocent people. They are responsible for it and the main reason is that the PM failed to leave peacefully. However, we are against retaliation and don’t condone with the retaliatory action that followed. But the Rajapaksa family is responsible for creating this unrest on May 9. The pro-Rajapaksa groups were called to Temple Trees given to eat and drink and the green light was given to unleash violence. We offer our condolences to all who had to face this violence, but this violence was unleashed on peaceful protesters who had staged their protest very peacefully for over 30 days. Instead of the Prime Minister stepping down peacefully they unleashed Rajapaksa terror on the people and created this terror.”

He also noted that if a new political culture is to be created, one should not give up one’s policies.

Joining the debate on the recent violence in the country and witnessing the emotional speeches of several parliamentarians whose houses were destroyed by mobs and proposals for compensation, he questioned whether compensation was paid to those whose houses had been damaged due to gas cylinder explosions and farmers who had lost their livelihoods due to the wrong decisions being taken by the government, prior to paying compensation to the MPs.
