Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarians Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake were ordered to be remanded till May 25 by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarians Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake over the unrest and violence perpetrated on peaceful protesters in front of the Temple Trees and in Galle Face Green in Colombo on May 9.

When the matter was taken up before the Magistrate, Deputy Solicitor General Riyaz Bary appearing on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department submitted a report on the summary of evidence against the MP Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake.

DSG Bary further stated that the suspects have been arrested following statements recorded from eye witnesses.

President’s Counsel U.R.De Silva appearing on behalf of the Sanath Nishantha stated that his client went there to stop the aforesaid attacks. He also pointed out that the offenses which had been filed against his client were bailable. So, he pleaded to release his client under any suitable bail condition. He further stressed that granting bail to his client would not cause any public disturbance and that his properties had already been completely destroyed.

President’s Counsel Razeek Zarook appearing on behalf of Jayathilake denied charges filed against his client too.

He further said that his client had already suffered a great deal of damage due to his Parliament membership. Accordingly, he also pleaded his client be released on bail under suitable bail conditions.
