SLMA condemns attack on unarmed civilians

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) strongly condemns the attack on unarmed civilians in front of the Prime Minister's official residence and at Galle Face.

SLMA President Prof. Samath D. Dharmaratne and Secretary Ishan de Soysa in a communique issued said that more than 100 patients have been hospitalised after being injured in a brutal attack by a group of Government supporters.

The attackers were armed with clubs, indicating that the attack was premeditated. The injuries in this case were more serious compared to similar incidents in the past.

"If not taken seriously, more of such incidents are likely to occur in the coming days. If the violence continues and more patients are admitted to hospitals, the shortage of drugs and surgical materials could increase, making health care unbearable. The people may suffer further as a result of the planned ongoing trade union action. It also appears that the authorities have lost the ability to govern the country peacefully. Therefore, the Sri Lanka Medical Association urges the Government to bow to the will of the people. We also call on the citizens of this country to carry out their protests peacefully," the SLMA statement said.
