China amenable to talks with IMF, consensus - Minister

Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalaka Godahewa stated that the ongoing discussions with China appear to be moving in a very positive direction. He was responding to a question by a journalist at the weekly Cabinet media briefing   held at the Government Information Department yesterday (03).

He added that China has a very important role to play in the IMF and that they are more likely to join the consensus proposals.

The Minister recalled that the telephone conversation between the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the Prime Minister of China recently had laid a good foundation for this.

Minister Nalaka Godahewa said that with the recent appointment of the main team to manage the country’s economy by the President, a number of policy decisions have been taken.

The Minister said that it was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to meet with top officials not only with the IMF but also with the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and a number of other financial institutions that provide assistance to our country.

He emphasized that there was no hope of changing the talks and that there was no secret discussion.

The Minister said that Sri Lanka had submitted a proposal to restructure international debt, especially short-term commercial debt, which is a huge burden on our country at the moment, and that China may have had to do a lot of special technical and legal advice in that regard. He also stated that an opinion had been expressed that it was not.
