More showers expected, 82 families affected

Deduru Oya, Rajanganaya spill gates opened

The prevailing showery condition is expected to continue, due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the Meteorology Department said.

Issuing an Advisory for Heavy Rain yesterday, the Department said that showers above 100 mm could be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Northern Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

“Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm can be expected at some places elsewhere too. The public are urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers,” the Advisory added.

“Wind speed can increase upto (40-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Hambantota via Matara due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka. The fishing and Naval communities are advised to be vigilant in this regard,” the sea area forecast said.

Padukka recorded the highest rainfall (157.1mm) during the 24 hours ended at 8.30 am yesterday. Above 100 mm rainfall was recorded also in Ampara (129.5mm), Ingiriya (129mm), Wallawa (108.5mm), and Thabbowa (102.7mm).

The Disaster Management Centre in its Situation Report yesterday morning said about 297 people belonging to 82 families have been affected due to high wind, lightening and landslide risks in the Kegalle, Rathnapura, Batticaloa, Badulla, Jaffna, Matale, Hambantota and Anuradhapura districts.

Five spill gates of Deduru Oya and and six spill gates of Rajanganaya Reservoir were opened yesterday and the DMC requested the people living in low-lying areas to be vigilant over the water levels.
