MPs must be prepared to work with commitment - March 12 Movement

To provide a meaningful outcome to the people’s agitation, every Member of Parliament (MP) must be prepared for a commitment without seeking any benefits or privileges and no one accused of any corruption or misappropriation should be a part of a new mechanism that is to be evolved, the March 12 Movement said in a statement yesterday.

“Our Steering Committee members strongly believe that every crisis creates greater opportunities. Therefore, the change that has not yet taken place, but must invariably take place tomorrow, is to place your trust and faith in a specific structure instead of focusing on individuals and handing them the responsibility of developing the country based on the reputation generated through propaganda and perceptions of society. This is a golden opportunity before us to create such a structure and this moment should not be missed,” the Movement headed by said. “It is in the best interest of the country considering future economic sustainability to engage in the Parliamentary process through consensus, those who have a sound understanding of the economy and experts in economic affairs. If required, the National List could be made use of to expand opportunities for the engagement of such experts. We also propose the immediate abolition of the Economic Advisory Council, which only meets the aspirations of a small minority,” the statement read.

It stressed that effective leadership with integrity and swift decision-making ability should be evident from the Executive President and MPs.

It stated that the mechanism that should be tested and placed into motion to eliminate the current volatility and uncertainty and firmly secure and strengthen the country would be centered on the Parliamentary process and framework.

“Sri Lanka moved into such a decisive and turbulent chapter at such a rapid pace due to the arrogant and immature actions and behaviour of the representatives of the public. They were so authoritarian in their conduct that they did not even have an iota of expression of respect that the sovereignty of the people was supreme. In return, they are experiencing bitter consequences. We, therefore, urge you to refrain from resorting to the violent repression of the mass rallies and the voices of dissent that are sprouting all over the country,” the press release stated. “There is a new emerging political culture and voice, categorically rejecting the inefficient hit and miss economic policies, governance structures and a plethora of disorganized policies pursued by the leaders for more than five decades.

“We too have been striving for over seven years to develop and harness active citizenship of this magnitude. However, this unique agitation of the people should only end with a constitutional framework that fully establishes and strengthens the rule of law in the country. Therefore, we strongly believe that any person who engages in the people’s agitation will adhere to a strict peaceful process,” the release added.

It also proposed to go for Constitutional reform, adding that the complete abolition of the Executive Presidency should be a mandatory condition.
