Over 100,000 residents of Medawachchiya and Rambewa who have been suffering from an acute scarcity of drinking water for centuries will get ample drinking water within another three months since the JICA funded Anuradhapura North Phase One Water Supply Project will be commissioned in June.
A Progress Review Meeting was held in this regard with the participation of State Minister Shehan Semasinghe and Anuradhapura Government Agent Janaka Jayasundara at the Anuradhapua Kachcheri recently.
North Central Province Water Supply and Drainage Board Assistant General Manager Sudath Ratnayake said that the Project has been completed at a cost of Rs. 11,515 million and the final testing of the water supplying mechanism is in progress now.
The Project consists of water intake, water treatment plant, four elevated water towers, four ground reservoirs, 89 km transmission pipe line, and 342km water supply line.
The main water source of the Project is the Mihintale Mahakanadarawa Wewa Reservoir, which holds a water capacity of 35,000
acre feet. Initially, around 6,700 cubic metres of water will be taken from the Reservoir per day. It will be increased up to 18,000 cubic metres after an additional supply of water is provided to the Mahakanadarawa Wewa Reservoir by 2024.
State Minister Semasinghe said that the Mahakanadarawa Tank will be elevated by one foot on the request of the farmers who cultivate 10,000 acres in the Yala and Maha seasons. The reconstruction of the spill gate will be completed within the next three months.
