Colombo Football Club through to the final

Colombo Football Club marched towards the final with a 5 goals to 3 win over Moragasmulla in their replayed semi-final under-19 soccer encounter for the Expolanka Youth Cup at City Football League grounds last Saturday.

The winner was adjudged off a penalty tie-breaker after neither side was able to make the scoring during the full-time play. Subsequently, Colombo FC lads managed to fire in all five kicks accurately while their rival players fluffed with a kick which resulted in the winners reserving a berth in the grand finale this week. This match was replayed after a protest was made by both sides at the outset of the match played two weeks ago, citing over irregularity of the player’s registration which was later proven, and the said players were sidelined for this game.

From the start whistle, both sides fought hard to post the initial scoring. But they were unable to make amends due to some stiff defensive play by the backs which was well supported by their goalkeepers who saved several scoring opportunities, which led the game to a barren first half. After the turnaround, once again they hunted to break the deadlock with some breathtaking moments under the heavy downpour and wet ground conditions.

But still, it failed to make an impact on the scoring. However, resulted in the game moving towards a penalty tie-breaker to decide the winner. H.N. Anthony cleared the first kick for winners followed by M.I.M. Ihlaf, M. Lafhar, and A.S.M. Khalick fired in the remaining kicks while W.R.P. Nemindra, Ajith Ashantha, and S. Perera scored for losers.

With this win, Colombo FC will take on the hometown team Java Lane in the final of this tournament on March17 (Thursday) at 3.30 p.m. at the same venue.
