The government’s measure taken to grant higher compensation to workers in the country and address most of their issues constructively is commendable, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)Parliamentarian Dr. Harsha de Silva said yesterday. He added that the SJB would support to pass this Motion in Parliament.

He made these observations commencing the second reading debate on the Workmen’s Compensation (Amendment) Bill.

He said that the 25 percent tax imposed on EPF should be debated. He added that when it was gazetteed they stood against it. He added that the Act itself has it that a tax cannot be imposed on EPF other than 2.5 percent.

He said that the promise to protect the workers’ right only is not enough but it should be kept by the government.

He said further that this fund is so massive that it is nearly Rs three trillion but the annual report has not yet been published. The last annual report was published in 2019.

He said there should be a mechanism to appoint worker’s representatives to the EPF.
