Facelift for 85 tanks in Anuradhapura District

Eighty five tanks in jungles of the Anuradhapura District will be renovated to provide water to the people and the wildlife, Anuradhapura Government Agent (AG) Janaka Jayasundara said.

The GA was addressing an awareness meeting recently at the Anuradhapura Kachcheri in this regard for the stakeholders of the World Bank Funded Climate Smart Irrigated Agriculture Project (CSIAP).

“Providing food for the people and the wildlife is vital. Supplying drinking water is also a top priority of the Project,” Anuradhapura GA Janaka Jayasundara said.

The GA urged the Officials of the Wildlife and Forest Conservation, Central and Provincial Irrigation Departments, and Divisional Secretaries among others to extend their full corporation to implement the Project.

CSIAP Provincial Deputy Director P.D.L. Premanath said that 300 tanks have been earmarked for rehabilitation. He also said that initially, 10 tanks in jungles will be renovated.

The CSIAP funded by the World Bank is being implemented by the Agriculture Ministry at a cost of US $ 125 million and it will be completed by 2024 covering the Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa Kurunegala, Puttalam, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara, Moneragala and Hambanthota Districts.

“Over 1,780 tanks belonging to 121 cascades in 258 Grama Niladari Divisions, which cover 81,468 hectares will be renovated thereby benefitting 57,838 farmer families,” the GA said.
