Ceylon Provincial League: Southern reserves berth in final

Southern defeated Sabaragamuwa by 4 goals to one in a penalty shoot-out in the second leg of the semi-final at Seevali Stadium in Ratnapura yesterday to reserve a berth in the final of the Ceylon Provincial Soccer League Tournament being played for the ‘Independence Trophy’.

It all happened after Southern ended the game 2-1 at full time which made the goal aggregate 2-all (Sabaragamuwa won the first leg 1-0), and this resulted in a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner. Eventually the winners booted in four goals against the solitary goal by their rivals.

Midfielder Keshan Dumindu opened scoring for Southern in extra time of the first half to go into the short whistle with a 1-0 scoreline. After the turn around the winners dominated play in all departments and took control to net another goal through Mohamed Rislan in the 54th minute of the match. But Sabaragamuwa bounced back in the dying stages of the match through Mohamed Ijas, which resulted in the game moving to a penalty tie breaker.

Lakshan Dhanajaya, Avishka Kavindu, Supun Dhananjya and R.A. Chaturanga's kicks were on target for the winners, while K.D.M.N. Dehapriya was the only successful kicker for the losers.

Northern will take on Southern in the final on March 5 (Saturday) at Durayappa Stadium in Jaffna.
