Former minister and deputy chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Jeevan Kumaratunga has resigned from all positions and responsibilities in the Party.
His resignation was handed over to SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday (22) morning and the letter was sent to SLFP Chairman and former President Maithripala Sirisena.
Addressing a media briefing after handing over the letter, Jeevan Kumaratunga stated that he will join the New Lanka Freedom Party in the future to embark on a political journey with the public.He said that sections of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Samagi Jana Balavegaya and progressive forces have already agreed to the move. Kumaratunga said that they would also receive the blessings of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for this. The former minister said that
he had worked with the SLFP for about 35 years and the Kumaratunga phobia of the Party leaders was growing.Kumaratunga said that he had patiently endured various insults in such a
situation and that the SLFP members were deeply disappointed with the hypocrisy of the SLFP leaders, who at times whitewashed the government and sometimes criticized the government for its policy.
Kumaratunga said that the New Lanka Freedom Party was currently preparing a programme that would be acceptable to the youth of the country under various subjects and that
he hoped to take that programme across the country in the future. He also invited all progressives to join in implementing this national programme. Accordingly, a broad alliance will be formed and the victory of the people will be marked in a short period of time, he said.
Kumara Welgama is currently the leader of the New Lanka Freedom Party. I do not want to create a new image because I was in politics for a long time in the SLFP. But at present I do not
see a real national and political programme in the SLFP. So there is no point in postponing it and remaining there. The actions of former President Maithripala Sirisena and those in charge of the SLFP are questionable.The aspirations of the people cannot be fulfilled within their double
standard. I got involved in politics as an artiste then.Vijaya Kumaratunga was my political leader.When I handed over the letter, the General Secretary of the SLFP requested me to resolvethe issues without panicking.
But I handed over the letter after deciding to leave the SLFP. There will be no change in my decision. In the future, various forces will join hands with us to win the national programme in moving towards a broad alliance. We are not working to win a party or an individual, but to win the people.
