Panadura UC Chairman’s proposal defeated at monthly meeting

A proposal tabled by Panadura Urban Council (UC) Chairman seeking the UC approval for increasing annual taxes on 24 shops in Panadura was defeated by four votes at its monthly meeting on February 2.

The recommendation to increase the annual taxes of these 24 traders has been approved by the UC Finance Committee and the same proposal was tabled at the monthly meeting.

Vice Chairman P. H. Wilman told the Council that it is not the time to impose taxes on traders along the pavement or at shops in Panadura. The United National Party (UNP), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) opposed the proposal of the Chairman. JVP Councillor Chandana Hettiarachchi said that votes of the Councillors must be taken for the approval. Ten Councillors voted against the proposal while six in favour thereby defeating the proposal by four votes.

The Chairman said after the vote that this was the first time a proposal by him was defeated at a Council meeting.
