Sir D. B. Jayatilaka’s 154th Birthday Anniversary commemorated

MoU signed to safeguard his legacy for coming generations

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Public Trustee and the Department of Archeology was signed yesterday at the 154th Birthday Anniversary Commemoration of Sir D. B Jayatilaka, which was held at the Public Trustee’s Department in Colombo under the patronage of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Representing the Public Trustee Attorney-at-Law Ganesh Dharmawardena and representing the Department of Archeology its Director General Prof. Anura Manatunga signed the MoU.

Next year at the 155th Birth Anniversary, the two parties agree to compile an Archaeological Dictionary, establish a Young Archaeological Society, search and collect old documents related to Sir D.B Jayatilaka, prepare a detailed book on Sir D. B Jayatilaka and his residence, ‘Turban House’ and createg a video on Sir D. B Jayatilaka.

Sir D.B Jayatilaeka’s 154th Birth Anniversary Commemoration was held in a charm and solemn manner at his residence, which is the present Public Trustee Department.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that the need for people like Sir D.B Jayatilaka has arisen today. “Sir D. B Jayatilaka was an excellent patriotic who lived in our country. He was a man who was dedicated to what our country needed at that time. Education was the basic need of our country at that time when we were under the control of the imperialists. Therefore, he did a tremendous job in this regard from his youth. His service was a great help to the needs of the era and that is the same need we have today. Today we need a leadership to shape society to suit the needs of the age. We need leaders who recognise the social needs,” the Speaker said.

Speaker Abeywardena added that Sir D. B Jayatilaka is seen as a leader who has fulfilled his duties to the fullest and his remembrance is seen as a service to present and future generations.

Public Trustee Attorney-at-Law Ganesh Dharmawardena said that a number of activities will be launched to commemorate Sir D.B Jayatilaka's 155th Birthday Anniversary and the Department of Archeology has also joined hands with the Department of Public Trustees in this regard.

Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) Chairman Attorney-at-law W. Dayaratne, Legal and Administration Director Attorney-at-Law Rakhitha Abeygunawardana, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, National Heritage Performing Arts and Rural Arts and Promotion State Minister Vidura Wickremanayake, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay and Relatives of Sir D.B Jayatilaka were present.
