‘Many students have become drug, liquor addicts’

A large number of students of leading Government and private schools in all provinces have addicted to drugs and liquor, Kurunegala District Adikarana Sanganayake, Most Venerable Dunkannawe Vijitha Nayaka Thera said.

The Thera was addressing a meeting of Dhamma School Heads of the Kurunegala District yesterday at the Bingiriya Ancient Raja Maha Viharaya, Kurunegala.

“About 560 students had been arrested by Nuwara Eliya and Rathnapura Police during the past two months while the students were climbing Sri Pada along with narcotics,” the Thera said.

The Thera also said that therefore, over 600 educational programmes on drug prevention will be conducted at the Sunday Dhamma Schools in the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts of the North Western Province under the guidance of Dhamma School Principals.

“Parents will be made aware of how they can save their children from drugs at these educational programmes,” the Thera added.
