Many tragic deaths due to bathing and swimming in unsafe rivers and waterways

The school heads of the Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts should not allow their students or teachers to go on field trips or educational tours irresponsibly hereafter as many tragic deaths are caused by irresponsible behaviour of students and school teachers, said the Kurunegala District Senior Education Director W. M. Balasoorya yesterday.

He made this observation, while speaking at a meeting of school heads of the North Western Province held yesterday in Bingiriya, Kurunegala. He added that about 43 persons including 18 school children have died of drowning during this year (2022) countrywide.

He said further that the Education Ministry had to interdict six senior government school teachers and two school heads last year (2021) since they were responsible for the tragic deaths of students by allowing the students to bathe in unsafe waterways.

Bathing and swimming in unsafe rivers, waterways have led to many deaths during this year and about 89 people had died of drowning last year.

Some people have drowned due to being drunk heavily, while bathing in deep waters of the rivers .
