The High Commission celebrated India’s 73rd Republic Day in Colombo yesterday. It was on January 26, 1950 that the world's largest written Constitution came into force. This momentous occasion will be observed through a series of ceremonies and events organised by the High Commission, throughout the day, in strict compliance with COVID-19 protocol.

After paying tributes to the fallen heroes of Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) at the IPKF memorial, High Commissioner Gopal Baglay hoisted India’s national flag at India House – residence of High Commissioner of India – and inspected the Guard of Honour.

The High Commissioner also read out excerpts of the President of India's message. A special video message from External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar was shared with the audience. The event also featured songs by the Sri Lanka Navy band and a cultural programme organised by High Commission’s Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre.

The High Commissioner also participated in Republic Day celebrations at the Ratmalana Param Dhamma Chaitya Pirivena, where around 10 Indian students are studying. Religious observances by the Mahasangha to invoke the blessings were also conducted during the event.

In the evening, a ceremonial reception was also held at India House for friends of India.

The 73rd Republic Day of India coincides with celebrations of 75 years of India’s Independence-Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM), across the globe. The High Commission has commenced a series of special events dedicated to AKAM from January 26 2022 – February 4, 2022. The events will include a mega cultural event, unveiling the bust of Rabindranath Tagore at Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo and trade promotion event etc. Consulate Generals of India in Hambantota and Jaffna and the Assistant High Commission in Kandy also observed the 73rd Republic Day of India by organising special events.
