Ministry holds ‘Access to Justice’ Mobile Service in North

The Justice Ministry has organized a Mobile Service ‘Access to Justice’ covering the entire Northern Province from January 26 to 30, to educate the public about the services provided by the Ministry and its agencies to the people of the Northern Province.

A special media briefing was held under the patronage of Justice Minister Ali Sabry PC at the Justice Ministry Auditorium yesterday.

Speaking at the press conference, Minister Sabry said that the mobile programme will cover five districts in the Northern Province, namely Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Jaffna and Kilinochchi.

He said the main focus was on the issue of missing persons during the civil war and if there had any injustice to the families of the missing persons, they hoped to issue a death certificate or compensation to them adding that the government had allocated an additional Rs. 300 million from the budget to compensate for the disappearances.

He further said that new court complexes in the Northern Province will be unveiled to the public in parallel to this programme.

“This mobile service will be launched island wide in the future to build a society of law enforcement and equality and to educate the people about the law. It is strength to face the challenges posed by the international community and that having a strong local mechanism for the problems in the country is a good message to the international community as well.” he added. “In collaboration with the Office of National Unity and Reconciliation, the Office on Missing Persons, the Institutions for the Compensation and other offices which operate under the Justice Ministry is working to address the issues of the people of the area and their areas of residence, especially to the families of the disappeared and to give priority to reconciliation,” he said. Justice Ministry Secretary M.M.P.K Mayadunne said that the second phase of this mobile service program will be launched in the Eastern Province, the third phase in the Southern Province and the fourth phase in the Central Province.
