Squatters in Matale District seek land deeds

A large number of people are squatting on State lands in the Matale District for nearly three decades without title deeds or other valid documents for the lands.

These people said that a majority of families living in Uda Gammana (Reawakened villages) in the District have not yet received any permit for occupying these lands.

They said that they have lost many privileges due to this reason.

Some people in these villages, however, said that they have been provided with land deeds about 20 years ago. A senior official of the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA), meanwhile, said that after 1993, the families living in reawakened villages were not issued land deeds for various reasons.

“However, land deeds will be issued to such families soon,” an NHDA official added.
